I was super stoked to watch Get Out. I saw the trailer last year and was excited off the jump. Finding out the brainchild behind this horror movie was one-half of the comedic duo of Key & Peele made this an even more curious watch, and I was definitely not disappointed.
The film follows an interracial couple, who are about to make their first trip to meet the girlfriend’s parents. Things go south when the family hosts their annual garden party and introduce their daughter’s black boyfriend to all their friends.
Get Out was dope. It’s a smartly thought out and well directed thriller, that dabbles with racial issues that unfortunately reflect the current zeitgeist in this country. First time director and comedian Jordan Peele does an excellent job with his own script and unravels this crazy story like a fucking pro. Peele’s comedic timing definitely comes into play and helps give this thrill ride of a movie some nice breathing room, letting the audience ease up a little bit before the movie takes them to a very dark and twisted place.
The acting was solid all around– the whole cast did a great job. The film’s protagonist, Chris, was awesomely portrayed by Daniel Kaluuya, who I honestly know nothing about, but will definitely be on the look-out for anything this dude does in the future. His character was well rounded and grounded, making it easier for the audience to identify with him. The antagonists in the film– and there are plenty– definitely accomplished what they set out to do: All of them were off-putting, weird, and just downright fucking evil.
The blood and gore came in the form of some huge payoffs in the third act of the movie. No spoilers here, so I won’t get into it, but damn the gore was satisfying and unexpected.
Get Out was a super satisfying watch. It was definitely a breath of fresh air in a stale horror landscape. The unique and contemporary ideas, mixed with some solid acting and some pretty funny comic relief, truly make this film a must watch and a top contender for one of the Top 6 Horror movies of 2017.
