No One Can Save You from Yourself marks the triumphant return of Detroit natives Walls of Jericho. After taking an 8 year hiatus from the game to spend time with their families and work on other projects, like vocalist Candace Kucsulain The Beautifuls and drummer Dustin Schoenhofer’s Bury Your Dead and Vision of Disorder. The time of has served the band well. On their first studio album in almost a decade, Walls of Jericho show that they have not a lost a single step. In fact, the band sounds fiercer than ever.
The new Walls of Jericho album has made its way into my daily rotation of awesome metal. This one honestly blindsided me– I wasn’t expecting such aggressiveness from the new WoJ. The Intro track, aptly titled “Intro,” does a good job of getting the blood pumping. Rightly so, the real kick off track “Illusion of Safety,” is not even 2 minutes long, yet it feels like a 10-minute-long ass-kicking. The aggressiveness continues in the title track “No One Can Save You from Yourself,” and vocalist Candace says it best, “This is the turning point, I’m never looking back!” The album does not let up ‘til the ender, track 13, “Probably Will”, when Candace lets her voice box take a little breather from all the brutality and sings the whole song. Very melodic track, definitely has that haunting aspect to it.
Guitarists Chris Rawson and Mike Hasty keep the party going all album long with in your face aggressive riffs and breakdowns that will leave the mosh pit full of body bags. The rhythm section, Arron Ruby (bass) and Dustin Schoenhofer (drums) will make sure the circle pit will never miss a beat. They keep the bass and the beats lean and mean. Lead singer Candace’s guttural growl blends seamlessly into the sweet thrashy hardcore noise. Barnburners like “Relentless,” “Reign Supreme,” and “Beyond All Praise” keep this thing cookin’ ‘til the final song of the album.
Walls of Jericho have released a heck of a metal record. After an 8-year hiatus, they were definitely itching to get back into things– and they did not disappoint. Heck, even the production value on this record, compared to previous efforts, is better. The album comes through the speakers crystal clear, allowing the listener to enjoy every breakdown in this record. The band will be out touring this summer and hopefully that will lead to more awesome new music from this hardcore quintet. //Arturo Padilla
