Godzilla: King of the Monsters focuses its story on Monarch, a crypto-zoological agency determined to study and ultimately release the seventeen god-like monsters that are resting within the Earth. When unforeseen events occur releasing these hibernating gods, it’s up to Godzilla to save the day.

This movie was painful to watch. It was a total snooze fest. Yup, you heard that right. A movie about giant monsters battling it out for supremacy was a total bore. This was mainly due to the terrible story that unfolded on the screen. Now, fans of Godzilla movies will argue they don’t go watch a Godzilla movie for the story. To this I say, then why waste your time? When a film’s plot is so devastating that it affects the mindless CG action, then you have a problem. This is the case for this movie. The story is so egregious that all the kaiju battles fall flat on their faces. It sucks for director Michael Dougherty, who has given us genre gems like Trick ‘r Treat and Krampus. Not everyone works well with a blockbuster budget.
The acting is forgettable and there is really no single performance that’s even worth talking about. The actors get hung out to dry with the source material. The big monster fights are filled with bright colors and loud noises, which lend to its demise. It becomes rather difficult to decipher what the hell is going on at times. The filmmakers really managed to hammer our senses in the worst way possible. The battles also have no heart to them: They come and go and you feel empty afterwards. This is why I mentioned the story telling does not help the action. You’re already so deflated from the shitty plot that when the monsters come on screen, you’re hoping for some absolution— but the audience gets nothing but an overload to the senses.

One good thing to take away are the awesome monster designs and the monster action. By that I mean when a monster is solo on screen it definitely looks dope. Joined by other monsters, the optics start to get muddled. There are a couple of monster filled scenes that look good only because they are not engaging each other.

What a disappointment. This movie looked so awesome in the trailers that I was sure I’d have a good time watching it. Wrong. It was a cluster fuck. The filmmakers didn’t know what to do with all the pieces of this puzzle. In turn we got a shitty movie. Where's your crown King Nothing?  //Arturo Padilla
