Survival Horror videogames have taken a few hits over the last few years as bigger companies transitioned into action-adventure titles. More guns and more fighting also meant less frightening scares. But the public has fought back that notion as videogames are finding their way back to full survival horror. Just take a look at Capcom’s Resident Evil series, for example. Its return to full horror is shaping up to be one of the scariest games I’ve ever seen.
We’ve previously written a list of six horror videogames to look forward to, but the recently announced The Bunker for Playstation 4 has such a neat idea it deserved its own post.
Back in the early 1990s, as programmers were still figuring out what kind of experiences they could manage with videogames, one of the more interesting game types included FMVs (or full motion videos). Although many of those games are infamously dated by today’s standards (like Dragon’s Lair or rail shooter Mad Dog Mccree), some of them managed to age well thanks to experimenting with horror. Hearkening back to games like Night Trap (which had the player roaming around a house trying to save a group of girls from vampires) or even Phantasmagoria (which made waves with its torture and dismemberment scenes) is Wales Interactive’s The Bunker.
In this live action sci-fi thriller, the player will follow a young boy, John, who was born in an underground bunker in 1986 when the world was in the midst of a nuclear war. 30 years later, he’s the only remaining survivor who now has to explore the bunker and figure out the meaning behind his suppressed memories. What makes The Bunker so interesting is that it was all filmed on location at a decommissioned nuclear shelter in England. According to Wales Interactive, the setting’s authenticity also comes from lots of the props, which were already in the bunker to begin with. It’s a point and click adventure (so it’s like the previously mentioned Dragon’s Lair) coupled with live action jumps and scares. It’s basically an interactive horror film– and that’s just the fucking coolest. I’ve never played a full motion videogame myself, so I can’t wait to take a crack at it.
Best part about all of this is how soon we’ll be able to play this game. The Bunker is set to release later this month for Playstation 4. We’ll let you know what we think as soon as we get our hands on it. //Nick Valdez
