We sift through a lot of music here at Corpsefeed. I do my best to filter out the trash releases from the good ones. It’s a time-consuming process listening to all that stuff and I personally like to review the good stuff— aside from the established artists that release new music. This week I had the treat of listening to this new band called Her Worst Nightmare. The Chicago based death metal quartet just released their debut album last month and it is damn good.
The band is comprised of Moises Sepulveda on guitar, Jason Caruana on drums, Carlos Bahena on vocals and Nick Ruiz on bass. The band has been together since 2009, but they have honed their respective skills and put out a banger of a debut album. They managed to blend death, thrash and hardcore into their style successfully and every song on the album showcases this stylistic blend. Aside from their playing style, the album is well mixed and produced. In some instances, the sound quality reminds me of Lamb of God’s New American Gospel; raw, unfiltered, but with a sharp attack that cuts through the mix.
The album kicks off with the death ladled track “Found in a Pool of Blood”. The next couple of songs on the record, “A Touch of Madness” and “Destination Death…”, exhibit the stylistic blend I mentioned before. The tones of death, thrash and hardcore are weaved together to create a sick aural experience that helps diversify their sound. As we move along the album, we come across a nice little number called “Nunfucker” which sounds like Cannibal Corpse and Converge had a baby, and that their unholy union was sprinkled with ashes from the pits of hell. The track is pure brutality. Another favorite track of mine is the thrashy-deathcore “In a Heartbeat”. The song goes through several changes that showcase the talent of these young musicians. They’re able to start you off in one place and seamlessly throw you to the other end of the spectrum— good shit.
This album gets better with every listen. The crazy part is that these guys are just starting their journey and they sound so crisp. I honestly can’t wait to hear what the future holds for this group— I expect nothing but good things from them.

6 QUESTIONS WITH CORPSEFEED

What are some of your favorite bands?
"Some of our favorite bands that got us writing music together are Slayer, Underoath, Zao, Unearth, Haste the Day, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Martyr A.D., Glass Casket, Norma Jean, Throwdown, Nevermore, Cannibal Corpse, The Black Dahlia Murder, The Red Chord, Broken Hope, Sepultura, and Mercyful Fate."
How long did it take you guys to write the record?
"This first record is long overdue for us, so these songs have been around for several years. We've all always had other projects going on but now we're all in with Her Worst Nightmare finally. We put our record out 3/15/19 and we just tracked 5 songs on 4/20/19 for an EP coming out next year as well!"
Who’s responsible for the sick cover art?
"Our good friend Anthony Duran is the artist for all of the album art and we couldn't be happier with him. With the little direction we gave him he completely shattered our expectations. Also, credit goes to Kevin Kertesz for doing a killer job on all of the colorization of the artwork."
Which song or songs on the album are your favorite?
"Every song on the album means a lot to us. 'Part of the Collective' is a killer tune that's about 50/50 written by myself and Moe, with Carlos writing all the lyrics, so that one has a big part of each of us on it, and 'Full Moon Fishing' is always fun to play. The songs 'Slaughtered For Her Meat' and 'A Gruesome Farewell' have fragments of really old songs from mine and Carlos' old band, so it's cool keeping those alive and they fit right in with us. There's a ton of history for all of us on this record, it was like finishing a huge chapter of our lives and it's awesome finally being able to get them out for the rest of the world to hear."
Favorite horror movies?
"The Exorcist is a huge movie for us. There's elements of it throughout the record and is still the Scariest movie of all time. Runners-up are Halloween (1978) and George Romero's Night of the Living Dead!"
When are you coming to NYC?
"We will come to NYC whenever we find anyone willing to bring us out there, We're looking to travel as much as possible so the answer is Asap!"
