It’s that time of the year folks– the Halloween decorations are being strung up and your local shops have the shelves stocked with cavity-inducing treats at bargain prices. The Party City commercials rocking “Thriller” are making you wonder what the hell you’re going to be for Halloween this year, while TV providers are trying to do their best to dish out “scary” content to commemorate the holiday. Horror movies are being thrown at you from all kinds of sources, and we at CorpseFeed are here to make your life a little easier this holiday season. We scrounged around Netflix’s extensive horror collection and picked six movies that will brighten up your Halloween.
6 - HUSH
Mike Flanagan’s (Oculus, Ouija 2) 2016 slasher/home invasion flick is one of the smartest and effective horror movies in recent memory. Hush tells the story of Maddie, a deaf writer, who lives secluded in the woods, and her night of terror at the hands of a ruthless killer. Not only was the protagonist not dumb, the killer was fucking great. The movie makes great use of its setting, and gives the audience an awesomely memorable cat-and-mouse game. At just under 90 minutes, there’s nothing to lose with this indie darling of a movie.
5 - THE HORDE
This French revenge horror/thriller follows a group of cops hunting down a merciless gang who is responsible for the death of their partner. This is pretty much a Dredd/The Raid situation where you have some good guys entering a building complex, and they have to work their way up to the big boss’ apartment. One thing that makes The Horde unique is the fact that a fucking zombie outbreak just popped off. So on one side you have some mean ol’ gangsters, and on the other hand you have blood-thirsty zombies– just swell.
4 - FROM DUSK 'TIL DAWN
The Robert Rodriguez classic (now a TV show on Rodriguez’s own El Rey network) follows two brothers and their hostages on the run from the law, as they try and stay alive at a vampire den that was masquerading as a biker bar. With a stellar cast, including the likes of George Clooney, Harvey Keitel, and Quentin Tarantino, this movie became a cult classic as soon as it was released. The practical effects, the homemade weapons (wooden stake jack hammer anyone?), Salma Hayek, and the awesome action sequences make this movie tons of fun and definitely worth another watch.
3 - DEATHGASM
Heavy metal and brutal horror is the name of the game in this flick from New Zealand. Deathgasm is the story of a metal band who manage to conjure up a fucking demon while practicing in their garage. This movie has it all– mutilations, decapitations and shit load of blood. Horror nerds will definitely appreciate the practical effects and the rad story. Plus, the soundtrack is pretty awesome too.
2 - RE-ANIMATOR
A horror classic and a fine adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s tale about a medical student who has discovered a formula that will reanimate dead tissue, Re-Animator, is a quintessential horror film and a must see in this ghoulish month of October. You will not be disappointed, as the movie showcases the best of the 80’s horror era with excellent practical effects, a simple but well thought out story, and some awesome characters: This flick will definitely make any Halloween movie night this month top notch.
1 - HELLRAISER
Clive Barker’s seminal horror masterpiece about a puzzle cube (The Lament Configuration) that opens up a doorway to another plane of existence, where a group of sadistic demons, known as Cenobites, await to torture the unlucky soul who figures out the cube’s mystery. Hellraiser has stood the test of time to become a massive cult hit. The movie spawned a very forgettable franchise, save for the first two movies, but it has managed to leave a lasting impact on the horror world. With a memorable antagonist in Pinhead, and a wickedly great story to boot, Hellraiser is a must see for anyone who wants to delve in the macabre– and a perfect flick for a spooky October night.
